Kolkata, August 2024 – In a significant development in the tragic rape and murder case of a junior doctor from Kolkata’s Kar Medical College, the Calcutta High Court has directed further investigation into the matter. This directive came after the court expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police so far.
The junior doctor, a 26-year-old postgraduate student, was found dead in her hostel room in late July. Initial reports suggested that the victim had been sexually assaulted and then strangled to death. The incident sent shockwaves across the city and sparked widespread outrage among medical students and the general public.
The police initially arrested two suspects, both of whom were known to the victim. However, the court has raised concerns about the thoroughness of the investigation, noting several discrepancies and unexplored leads. In response to a petition filed by the victim’s family, who alleged that the investigation was being conducted in a lackluster manner, the court has now ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to take over the case.
Justice Arindam Sinha, presiding over the matter, emphasized the need for a meticulous and impartial investigation. “This is not just a case of murder; it is a brutal attack on the safety and dignity of women in our society. We cannot allow such heinous crimes to go unchecked,” he stated. The judge also ordered that the SIT must submit a progress report within two weeks.
The court’s order has been welcomed by the victim’s family and various student unions, who have been protesting and demanding justice for the deceased. “We have faith in the judiciary, and we hope that the SIT will bring out the truth and ensure that those responsible are punished,” said a spokesperson for the victim’s family.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police have assured full cooperation with the SIT and reiterated their commitment to bringing the culprits to justice. The case has also caught the attention of human rights organizations, which have urged for a swift and transparent investigation to prevent any tampering with evidence or undue influence.
As the investigation continues, the case serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young women, even in educational institutions. The High Court’s intervention is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring that justice is served in this deeply disturbing case.
