Lord Shiva lost to Charpatinath
In this article we first want to mention the story of Charapatinath. Once there were nine great saints known as Navnath. He had once spread the ‘Navnath sect’ started by Lord Dattatreya. This incident is narrated in a religious book ‘Navnath Bhaktisar’, in which it is told how Navnath was more powerful than the Trinity. In the 39th chapter of this book, it is said how Lord Shiva was defeated by the great sage Charapatinath.
The whole story is as follows, once Indradev insulted Narada Muni and Lord Narada wanted to take revenge for his insult. For this reason, they take Charapatinath to heaven. After reaching there they eat some fruits and pluck some flowers. By doing this, the guards of heaven come to know about this and they come to arrest Charapatinath. Sensing the situation Narada Muni disappears from there but Charapatinath defeats the soldiers as they were powerful enough.
Devraj Indra gets the news of this entire incident and he sends some other gods for war but in the end the gods also get defeated at the hands of Charapatinath. On hearing the news of the gods being defeated, Indra understands that it is not easy to defeat Charpatinath. Devraj Indra now approaches Lord Shiva and asks for his help. On this Lord Shiva and his followers go to the spot but Charpatinath was very powerful. After this, Lord Vishnu is invited in this war but he is also defeated by Charapatinath. When another god ‘Pippalayan’ comes to know about this, he intervenes and saves Lord Shiva and other gods.
Conclusion
Most of the stories about the defeat of Lord Shiva are taken from Vaishnava literature. We do not have any proof whether these stories are 100% reliable or not because in ancient times there was a conflict between Shaivas and Vaishnavas for some time. Scholars believe that his devotees fabricated stories of Lord Vishnu defeating Lord Shiva and vice versa to prove the supremacy of their gods.
